Language is the accepted means of communication
of deaf people. Its use is reinforced by its acceptability,
usefulness in teaching and in general deaf dealings with the
hearing world as also the language role and utility in deaf
peoples' dealing within their own community.
Since signing as a tool makes deaf lives easier and allows
them to develop cognitively as well as their own identity,
the attitude finds expression in project such as the one proposed
by the Sustainable Development Networking Programme (SDNP),
Pakistan. This project titled "Information & Communication
Technologies Assisted Learning Tool for The Deaf In Pakistan"
has been funded through the Pan Asia ICT R&D Grants Programme
award.
The Project aims to extend and promote Pakistan sign language
(PSL) through the Information & Communication Technology
(ICT) medium for enhancing the deaf education and learning.
The researched ICT output would serve as a prototype for formulating
systematic approaches to developing pedagogical tools for
enhancing the learning of the deaf community.
SDNP, initiated by United Nations Development Programme, is
now a part of IUCN - The World Conservation Union Pakistan
Programme's Education, Communication & Knowledge Management
Group.
