Many of the deaf teachers are very keen to improve the situation for the next generation of deaf children. Although there are some excellent examples of schools for deaf children in Pakistan, it is not possible in the near future to provide sign-language assisted education for all deaf children in separate schools for economic, cultural and logistical reasons. The online & offline technologies SDNP-IUCN proposes to employ is thus a very realistic option in capacity building of not only a community of deaf adults who can teach Pakistani Sign Language and provide positive role models for deaf children and their parents but also provide deaf children around the country to enhance their PSL assisted learning through self-paced study.

The Project has been running since December 2002 and in that time has established that our primary stakeholders (deaf people) are receptive and excited with the prospect of using an ICT learning tool to enhance their capacities.

The real reach and impact would be apparent in the upcoming months when the PSL assisted learning is made available on CDs and web and studied for its effects on learning of and teaching to the deaf.
